One of the projects I still enjoy talking about was a Delphi application for a cinema in King William’s Town. You could choose a seat on the screen and print a ticket on a dot-matrix printer. There’s something satisfying about hearing your code come out of a printer.

At Monash University in the early 2000s, I worked as a Technical Services Officer across workstations, networks, Unix servers, telephony and campus systems. That taught me to follow a problem through the systems around it, and to ask who else needed to be involved.

The web years brought a different set of problems. Through Clickthinking/iProspect, I contributed to work associated with &Beyond Africa, African Impact, Seeff and e.tv. Behind those sites were content, data and integrations that had to work together. You had to understand how the business operated to build something useful for it.

At Teraco, I worked on CRM, enquiry systems and analytics. Commerce and digital identity followed, including ThisIsMe.com through Krazyboyz Digital. Later work took me into public-safety communications at RapidDeploy, financial platforms at Kabru and education operations at IT Career Switch. Each setting gave me more to learn about the people and processes around the software.

AI is the latest chapter, and there’s plenty to be excited about. My standards for the work haven’t changed much: understand the problem, make the decisions clear, and leave something people can run and look after. A clever demo is a good start. The next question is what happens when people rely on it.
